HOW LONG DO LASH EXTENSIONS REALLY LAST?

eyelash extensions being applied

The honest answer is as a lash artist who prioritises retention and natural lash health: lash extensions last as long as your natural lashes do.Your natural lashes go through a growth cycle, and it’s completely normal to shed between 2 to 5 natural lashes every single day. Because extensions are attached to your natural lashes, they shed with them. That means gradual loss is expected and healthy.

On average, a full set will look its best for around 2 to 3 weeks before an infill is needed.

Why Retention Varies From Person to Person...

Not everyone’s retention will be identical. A few factors can affect how long your lashes stay full and fluffy:

  • Your natural lash growth cycle

  • Skin type (oilier skin can break down adhesive faster)

  • Aftercare routine

  • Skincare products used around the eye area

  • Lifestyle factors such as sweating or frequent swimming

This is why two people can get the same set and experience slightly different retention.

The 40 Percent Rule

A good guide to follow is the 40 percent rule.If you have less than 40 percent of your extensions remaining, it’s usually time for an infill. Waiting too long can lead to uneven gaps, overgrown lashes and, in some cases, needing a new full set instead.

Booking your infills every 2 to 3 weeks keeps your set looking balanced, fresh and intentional.

How to Make Your Lash Extensions Last Longer

Retention is a partnership between your lash artist and you. Here’s how to protect your investment:

  • Cleanse your lashes daily with a lash safe cleanser

  • Avoid oil based products around the eyes

  • Brush your lashes gently each morning

  • Avoid rubbing or pulling

  • Stay consistent with infill appointments

  • Clean lashes are happy lashes. Oil and build-up weaken the adhesive bond, so proper cleansing actually improves retention rather than ruining it.

Healthy Shedding Is a Good Sign

When applied and maintained correctly, lash extensions should never damage your natural lashes. It’s important to remember that shedding is not a sign of poor application. It is a sign that your natural lash cycle is working as it should. My priority is always the health of your natural lashes first.

Proper isolation, correct weight selection and intentional placement ensure your lashes remain strong underneath your extensions.
